Tadalafil and alcohol: do they interact?
The experts' suggestion is that you inform your doctor about alcohol consumption during treatment with tadalafil. When use is excessive (5 glasses of wine or 5 shots of whiskey, as an example), hypotensive effects are expected, says Yael Cooperman, pharmacist and biochemist specializing in clinical analysis.
"This means that there may be a drop in pressure, called orthostatic hypotension, which happens when you go from sitting or lying down to standing. Furthermore, the practice could increase the risk of side effects such as headache, dizziness and even fainting when trying to get up", adds Cooperman.
Although it is rare, some of the following manifestations may be observed when tadalafil is taken with alcohol:
- Sudden loss, reduction or change in vision
- Blurred vision
- Sudden change in hearing ability
- Ringing in the ear
- Dizziness
- Chest pain
- Skin irritation
It is important to seek medical help immediately if you experience one of the side effects listed above.
Alcohol and Erectile function
The use of PDE5 inhibitors in general and tadalafil in particular and moderate alcohol consumption have no strict contraindications. If taken in large quantities though, alcohol can reduce sexual desire and the patient may not respond adequately to the medication. In other cases, alcohol increases libido (desire), but makes erection difficult as it is a peripheral vasodilator (diverts blood to the skin, hands and feet).
The general recommendation is to keep the consumption of alcohol limited to 1-2 units. It is better still to abstain from liquor when receiving therapy for erectile dysfunction, especially keeping in mind that in many cases it is alcohol abuse that brings about erectile problems in the first place.
This is the case for people who consume alcohol every day or regularly and in large quantities. It is a known fact that in the long term, consuming alcohol uncontrollably and excessively can end up damaging the liver and, in the most serious cases, causing cirrhosis. But what few know is that liver disease negatively impacts sexuality. This is because the liver participates in the hormonal regulation system. And, consequently, it can mainly cause a drop in testosterone levels, the main male sex hormone.
Liver diseases can therefore cause erectile dysfunction or low libido problems. Furthermore, when the liver is weakened, our body generally feels more tired and slowed down – which is also not good for arousal. The role of tadalafil is to restore elasticity of the rigid blood vessels in the penis and improve erectile blood circulation, but only in the presence of adequate sexual arousal. This is yet another reason to adopt moderation in your alcohol habits when trying to improve your sex life.
